Vows to sustain legacy of exemplary leadership

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday witnessed a smooth change of leadership as Major General Waidi Shaibu assumed duty as the 25th Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

The brief but colourful handing and taking over ceremony took place at the Army Headquarters in Abuja between the outgoing Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, who is now the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), and his successor, Major General Shaibu.

In his remarks, the new Army Chief commended his predecessor for what he described as outstanding leadership, mentorship and unwavering commitment to the service.

He lauded the outgoing COAS for his achievements in equipment procurement, infrastructural development and the “Soldier First” concept, which prioritised troop welfare and operational readiness.

Shaibu pledged to consolidate on the gains recorded under his predecessor, while strengthening synergy among security agencies and other institutions to enhance national security.

He also promised to review the current security situation and respond promptly to emerging threats, with renewed focus on operational efficiency and troop morale.

“I salute the courage, passion, resilience and discipline of our troops in the field. Their sacrifices remain the cornerstone of our collective success,” he said.

The new COAS appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for the confidence reposed in him, and led senior officers in observing a minute silence in honour of fallen soldiers.

In his valedictory address, the outgoing COAS and new CDS, Lieutenant General Oluyede, thanked President Tinubu for his visionary leadership and for the opportunity to serve the nation in both capacities.

He praised officers and soldiers for their commitment and professionalism, urging them to extend the same loyalty to his successor.

“The mission remains the same — to ensure the security of lives and defend the territorial integrity of our nation,” he said.

Earlier, the immediate past Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Abdulsalami Ibrahim, described Oluyede as a visionary and selfless leader whose contributions would be remembered for years to come.

The ceremony featured the signing of the handing and taking over notes, decoration of the new Army Chief with the Army Headquarters insignia, inspection of the quarter guard, and group photographs with senior officers and field commanders.
