A Katsina-born engineer, Ibrahim Lawal Dankaba, has unveiled a locally developed armoured vehicle named “Begua” a Hausa word referring to a porcupine, an animal known for its natural defensive spikes.
In an exclusive interview with Katsina Times, Engr. Dankaba explained that the innovation is part of a community-driven security initiative designed to complement government forces and restore public confidence in areas plagued by insecurity.
“We chose the name Begua because of its meaning. A porcupine never attacks unless provoked, but once threatened, it defends itself fiercely. In the same way, this vehicle is not built for aggression but strictly for protection whenever communities come under attack,” he said.
Unlike most commercially available armoured vehicles, Begua is mounted on tracked wheels (APC style) rather than regular tyres, making it more suitable for Nigeria’s rough terrains. According to Dankaba, the vehicle can maneuver through farmlands, forests, muddy roads, and rough countryside without getting easily stuck, while offering strong ballistic protection for its occupants.
The project, which has moved beyond the design stage, is currently undergoing prototype testing. Dankaba revealed that the idea was conceived about two years ago at the height of bandit and terrorist attacks in northern Nigeria.
“In the coming weeks, we plan to invite the public and journalists to witness live demonstrations of Begua in action,” he disclosed.
He emphasised that the project is not intended to replace security agencies, but rather to strengthen and support them.
“This is a community partnership initiative. We want to assist the government and security forces, while encouraging cooperation among citizens, authorities, and stakeholders to protect lives,” he said.
Speaking directly to residents in communities under siege, Dankaba reassured them:
“We understand the fear and anxiety people are going through. Our message is simple: we are taking practical steps to help. While government and security agencies remain the backbone of national defence, local innovations like Begua can also make a difference.”
Katsina Times will bring a full feature on the Begua project across its platforms, including Katsina Times TV (YouTube), Katsina City News (Facebook), and other social media outlets.
