ASUP Presses Katsina Government Over Unfulfilled 25%, 35% Salary Increment

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic chapter, has convened a strategic meeting with its members to intensify efforts toward the implementation of the 25% and 35% salary increase structure for academic staff.
Held on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the meeting served as part of the union's annual gathering and focused on revitalizing its longstanding demands. Addressing the session, ASUP Chairman Comrade Nasiru Umar Gidado emphasized that the union has persistently submitted its request for salary adjustment to the government but has yet to receive a response.
Gidado clarified that the request is not for a new salary scale but an enhancement model intended to upgrade existing wage structures across tertiary institutions in Nigeria. He pointed out that several states have already adopted the improved structure, placing institutions in Katsina at a comparative disadvantage.
He raised concerns over staff retention, warning that some institutions currently benefitting from the increment are now attracting academic staff away from Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic.
In a unanimous resolution, union members agreed to embark on a peaceful protest to the offices of the institution’s Governing Council Chairperson and the Rector, seeking to register their displeasure over the continued silence from the state government.
Reacting to the protest plans, the Chairperson of the Polytechnic’s Governing Council, Hajiya Indo Muhammad, acknowledged Katsina State’s previous leadership role in staff welfare matters. She, however, expressed surprise at the delay in implementing the increment, noting that other states have already done so.
She assured the union that she would forward the matter to the Katsina State Head of Service and urged members to exercise patience while engagement with relevant authorities continues.
