Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has restated the country’s unwavering commitment to global nuclear disarmament during a courtesy visit by Dr. Robert Floyd, the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice President Shettima emphasized that Nigeria remains a strong advocate for a comprehensive ban on nuclear testing, underlining the nation’s devotion to peace, sustainable development, and global cooperation.

“The outcome of any nuclear conflict is never a win-win situation; it is always the opposite,” Shettima warned. “As a continent, Africa is not at war with weapons, but with poverty and the intertwined challenges of economic hardship and climate degradation. We have no business dabbling in nuclear weapons.”

He further stressed that Africa’s real priorities lie in ending poverty and addressing the devastating impacts of climate change, rather than acquiring nuclear capabilities.

In his remarks, Dr. Floyd applauded Nigeria’s leadership role in nuclear disarmament and expressed appreciation for the country’s consistent support of CTBTO’s mission.

The visit underscores Nigeria’s prominent voice in advocating for disarmament and global peace, reinforcing its role as a key player in international security discussions.
