Assistant Comptroller of Customs Sanusi Saulawa of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has advocated for the adoption of smart border innovations to improve trade facilitation, strengthen international cooperation, and enhance intelligence-driven enforcement. He made this call during his address at the 2025 edition of the Africa Border Security Week, held in Cape Town from May 6–7.
The high-level forum, themed “Strengthening Africa’s Border with Smart Technology,” convened leading experts, policymakers, and security operatives to discuss and forge partnerships aimed at creating smarter, safer, and more efficient border operations across the continent.
Representing the Nigeria Customs Service, AC Saulawa delivered a presentation showcasing the Service’s ongoing efforts in leveraging advanced technology and data-driven strategies to bolster border surveillance, streamline passenger processing, and combat illicit cross-border activities.
“In a world that is becoming increasingly sophisticated and connected,” stated AC Saulawa, emphasizing Nigeria Customs' dedication to “international collaboration, trade modernisation, and intelligence-driven enforcement.” He addressed the primary factors fueling illicit trade and proposed actionable strategies for policymakers and law enforcement agencies to effectively counter emerging threats.
A significant aspect of his participation was his contribution to a dynamic panel discussion featuring prominent thought leaders and operational experts from various customs, immigration, marine, aviation, and security agencies from Africa and beyond. The panelists shared valuable insights, addressed common challenges, and explored the potential of innovation in reshaping the future of secure and sovereign African borders.
The Africa Border Security Week continues to be a vital platform for fostering collaboration among regional stakeholders, with a strong emphasis on the transformative role of innovative technology in enhancing border security, promoting legitimate trade, and ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens.
