The Riverine Security (Coast Guard of the Federation) has extended warm Ramadan greetings to the Muslim community, highlighting the ease and blessings of Islamic practices and emphasizing the importance of religious unity in Nigeria.
In a statement issued by the Commandant General, Commander Bibi Oduku, the organization reflected on the significance of the holy month, expressing appreciation for the simplicity and inclusivity of Islamic traditions.
The Simplicity and Beauty of Islam
Addressing misconceptions about fasting, the statement noted that, contrary to common beliefs, fasting in Islam is designed to be manageable. Citing the Quran (Chapter 3, Verse 286), it reiterated that "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear." Muslims observe fasting for only 29-30 days in a year, with any additional fasting being voluntary.
The statement further highlighted the ease of worship in Islam, noting that Muslims can perform prayers in any mosque, use sand for ablution when water is unavailable, and even pray while sitting or lying down if unable to stand.
Additionally, Islamic financial obligations were described as straightforward, with Zakat set at just 2.5% of one’s wealth annually, provided the individual is not in debt. The process of marriage and burial in Islam was also underscored for its simplicity, removing financial burdens from adherents.
Call for Ethical Economic Practices
Commander Oduku emphasized that Islam discourages exploitative economic practices, including the collection of interest on loans and hoarding goods for price inflation. These principles, if widely adopted, could contribute to a more just and equitable society.
Commitment to Religious Unity
The Riverine Security (Coast Guard of the Federation) reaffirmed its commitment to fostering religious harmony and national unity. The organization expressed deep appreciation for the efforts of the Sultan of Sokoto in promoting peace among Nigerians of different religious and ethnic backgrounds.
The statement concluded with a message of goodwill to Muslims worldwide: "Assalamu Alaikum to all Muslims across the globe. Ramadan Mubarak."
Riverine Security (Coast Guard of the Federation) Ramadan Greetings.
