As part of ongoing efforts to revitalize adult education in Katsina State, a delegation from the National Mass Education Commission (NMEC), in collaboration with the Katsina State Agency for Adult Education, visited the Katsina Emirate on Thursday, February 27, 2025. The delegation was received by the Sarkin Dawan Katsina, Alhaji Abba Balarabe, on behalf of His Royal Highness, the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Dr. Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, CFR.
The visit aligns with the Katsina State Government’s initiative, under the leadership of Governor Malam Dikko Umar Radda, PhD, to revive adult education centers and integrate all districts, village heads, and traditional rulers into the program.
In his remarks, the Emir of Katsina reaffirmed the critical role of education in societal development and expressed his full support for the revival of the abandoned adult education system. He urged all district heads to embrace the initiative and ensure its effective implementation in their respective areas.
The delegation was led by Alhaji Yusuf Abdulkadir Aliyu, the Northwest Zonal Coordinator of NMEC, who highlighted the commission's role in formulating policies on adult education and ensuring their execution at state and local government levels.
“Our mandate is to develop adult education policies and hand them over to the states for implementation, ensuring that education reaches the most remote rural areas,” he stated.
On her part, Hajiya Bilkisu Muhammad Kaikai, the Executive Director of the Katsina State Agency for Adult Education, reiterated the state government’s commitment to combating illiteracy and unemployment, noting that both factors contribute to security challenges.
“Governor Malam Dikko Umar Radda is deeply committed to fighting illiteracy and unemployment. Our focus extends beyond formal education to include religious and vocational training, enabling individuals to become self-reliant,” she said.
Hajiya Kaikai also appealed to the Katsina Emirate for support and guidance in establishing more learning centers within the palaces of traditional rulers and district heads.
Additionally, the delegation conducted assessments of abandoned educational facilities to explore their rehabilitation and modernization in line with contemporary needs.
The visit underscores the collaborative efforts between the government, traditional institutions, and the public in revamping adult education in Katsina State. With this partnership, authorities aim to enhance literacy and vocational skills, ultimately reducing illiteracy and unemployment across the state.
