A four-day peacebuilding training for traditional leaders has commenced in Katsina, taking place at Hujrat Hotel from February 24 to 28, 2025. The initiative aims to strengthen the role of traditional rulers in promoting peace and resolving conflicts within their communities.
The event brought together key traditional leaders, including Sarkin Fulani Dangi, Alhaji Lawal Bagiwa, who represented the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Dr. Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, alongside other dignitaries from Katsina and Charanchi.
In his address, the Secretary to the Katsina State Government, Alhaji Abdullahi Garba Faskari, emphasized the significance of peace in community development.
"Progress is impossible without peace. Any initiative that fosters harmony is highly valuable. Traditional leaders have long played a crucial role in conflict resolution, and it is essential to enhance their capacity with modern mediation techniques," he stated.
He expressed gratitude to the Spring Programme, funded by the UK government, and commended Green Horizon for organizing the training. He also appreciated the Emir of Katsina for his continuous support.
Dr. Okoha Ukiwo, head of the Spring Programme delegation, reiterated the initiative's commitment to fostering peace across Nigeria. He noted that the UK government is concerned about Nigeria’s security situation, as instability in the country could impact the wider African region.
"We have analyzed security and peace challenges in northern Nigeria and are collaborating with key stakeholders to find solutions. Traditional leaders play a vital role in conflict resolution, and we are committed to enhancing their skills for a more peaceful society," he said.
Professor Muhammad Tabiu (SAN) of Green Horizon, who is leading the training, stressed that traditional leaders have a responsibility to ensure social cohesion. The program will equip them with advanced knowledge on dispute resolution and crisis prevention, as well as strategies for working effectively with security and judicial authorities.
"The goal is to enhance their mediation skills. When communities trust their leadership, it significantly reduces tensions and prevents violence," he explained.
The training also focuses on curbing the spread of weapons, reducing drug abuse, and improving relations between farmers and herders.
This initiative is expected to serve as a model for similar peacebuilding efforts across Nigeria, reinforcing stability and social harmony.
