The Medical Care Unit of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (ISMA) has organized a health awareness conference to educate Muslims on proper nutrition and well-being during Ramadan fasting. The event took place on Sunday, 23 February 2025, in Daki-Tara, Katsina State, under the leadership of the unit’s state chairman, Malam Abdulkarim Husamatu. Discussions focused on the best dietary practices for fasting individuals and the types of food that should be avoided to maintain good health.
The conference featured expert presentations from healthcare professionals. Alhaji Umar Ahmed, a UNICEF Nigeria Consultant, delivered a lecture titled “Nutritional Foods Beneficial for Fasting Individuals,” where he outlined essential food groups that help sustain energy levels and overall well-being during Ramadan.
Malam Kabir ISMA provided insights on “Foods to Avoid During Fasting,” cautioning against excessive consumption of fatty and sugary foods, which can lead to health complications such as high blood pressure and obesity.
Professor Abdullahi Danladi of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, analyzed the economic impact on food choices during Ramadan. He emphasized the importance of balancing affordability with nutritional value, offering guidance on how families can maintain a healthy diet despite financial constraints.
Islamic scholar Sheikh Yaqub Yahaya Katsina delivered the closing lecture on “The Impact of Fasting on Physical and Spiritual Health.” He explained that fasting is not only a religious obligation but also a natural detoxification process that purifies the body and strengthens mental discipline.
Katsina State House of Assembly member representing Katsina Local Government, Hon. Aliyu Abubakar Albaba, voiced concerns over the growing poverty in the country and prayed for lasting economic relief.
The event drew participation from prominent personalities, including Sheikh Isma’il Zakariyya Alkashnawi, PhD, Sarkin Fawan Katsina, Alhaji Nura, representatives from the Red Cross, Jama’atu Nasrul Islam, and other humanitarian organizations.
Attendees praised the conference as an enlightening initiative, commending the expert advice shared and calling for more educational programs to enhance public awareness on health and nutrition during Ramadan.
