NCC Audit Debunks Data Depletion Claims
By Zakariyya Adaramola
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has refuted claims of data depletion by mobile network operators, following an extensive audit of telecom networks across the country.
The audit, completed in the third quarter of 2024, revealed no substantial evidence of deliberate data depletion by operators, despite widespread complaints by subscribers. Many Nigerians have expressed frustration over the past year regarding rapid data consumption and poor connectivity, accusing telecom companies of increasing data charges covertly.
Subscribers noted that a typical ₦2,000 data bundle, which previously lasted three to four weeks, now depletes within three to five days. These grievances have been prevalent both online and offline, fueling suspicions of foul play by service providers.
However, the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, clarified during a review of the commission's 2024 activities that the allegations lacked concrete evidence. “Our findings indicate that there is no major data depletion issue in the industry. It appears to be more of a perception among users,” Dr. Maida explained.
He acknowledged minor technical issues in the networks, which the commission is working to address to improve user experience.
The telecom operators, on their part, recently urged the federal government to approve tariff increments to sustain operations, warning of potential economic setbacks if their request is ignored.
The NCC reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in the telecom sector, promising to safeguard consumer interests while addressing challenges in the industry.
