Sokoto Woman Reportedly Abducted and Charged After Raising Alarm on Banditry Crisis

Amnesty International has received a disturbing report regarding the abduction of Hamdiyya Sidi, who was secretly arraigned by the Sokoto State Government after posting a viral video on social media. In the video, she spoke out against the humanitarian crisis caused by relentless bandit attacks on villages in eastern Sokoto.
2. According to witnesses, Hamdiyya Sidi was seized by armed men on Wednesday in Achida town as she stepped out of her home to retrieve her phone from a charging point. She was reportedly beaten, strangled, and thrown from a moving tricycle, sustaining severe injuries.
3. The Sokoto State Government has since charged Hamdiyya Sidi with “use of insulting or abusive language” and “inciting disturbance”—charges Amnesty International views as a targeted effort to silence critical voices among young people who speak up for human rights in Sokoto State.
