NPC Participates in National Conference on Combating Fake News and Blackmail

ABUJA, 30 July, 2024 — The National Population Commission (NPC) took part in the 2nd National Roundtable Conference on Fake News and Blackmail, represented by Mrs. Nkoyo Nwakusor, Director of Public Affairs, who stood in for the Chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, fnsa.

The conference, held at Chelsea Hotel, Abuja, was organized by the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMICO) to address the significant threats posed by fake news and blackmail to national security and development.

Key government agencies and civil society groups participated in the event, including the Ministry of Police Affairs, National Assembly Service Commission, Ministry of Defence, Nigeria Police Force, EFCC, ICPC, NDLEA, Nigerian Immigration Service, NHRC, NBS, NCAA, NOA, and NiMET.

The roundtable aimed to:

- Highlight the implications of fake news and blackmail on government and non-governmental organizations;
- Identify strategies to track and mitigate threats to national defense, security, and development;
- Mobilize civil society and stakeholders against fake news and blackmail;
- Urge CSOs and the public to desist from such practices or face consequences.

A significant outcome of the conference was the establishment of an Action Committee comprising CIMICO, NPC, and NBS to map civil society organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria.

The NPC's participation underscores its commitment to tackling the challenges of fake news and blackmail in Nigeria.
