Katsina, 28 July 2024 - On Monday, the Katsina State Government, under the leadership of Acting Governor and Deputy Governor, Alhaji Faruq Lawal Jobe, held an emergency meeting with stakeholders and security agencies regarding the nationwide protest scheduled for 1 August.
The meeting included discussions with representatives from various youth groups, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), the Drivers' Union (N.U.R.T.W), the Traders' Association, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), the Voice of the Common Man (Muryar Talaka), and the "Nigeria First, Katsina First" organisation, among others. All participants agreed that there should be no protest in Katsina State.
The groups argued that protests typically lead to unrest and instability, citing examples from other countries such as Kenya.
The Traders' Association pledged to continue their business activities as usual, while urging security agencies to ensure the protection of their trading locations. Similarly, the Drivers' Union (N.U.R.T.W.) echoed this sentiment, stating their opposition to the protest.
Reflecting the consensus of the stakeholder groups representing the people of Katsina, Acting Governor Alhaji Faruq Lawal Jobe suggested addressing security issues affecting the state and called for prayers for relief.
Governor Jobe highlighted the efforts of both the Katsina State and Nigerian governments in improving the lives of citizens, detailing significant assistance provided by the state government, including rice, financial aid, and fertiliser support.
Jobe stated, "We, the people of Katsina, will come together to offer prayers for peace as we do every Islamic New Year, which we have named 'Yaumul Shukr' (Day of Gratitude)."
He concluded by expressing his wishes for continued peace and prosperity across Katsina State.
The meeting also included security personnel from the Civil Defence, the Nigerian Army, the DSS, and the Katsina State Police Command. The State Police Commissioner called for peace and urged anyone planning to participate in the protest to register their names and contact details for adequate security protection.
