President Bola Tinubu has approved a new national minimum wage of N70,000, as announced by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The announcement was made during a meeting with the leadership of the Organized Labour in Abuja on Thursday.
The decision follows a series of negotiations with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). NLC President Joe Ajaero, speaking to State House reporters, stated that the unions agreed to the new offer due to additional incentives and the President's promise to review the wage every three years.
This new minimum wage, once approved by the National Assembly, will replace the current N30,000 minimum wage, which expired on April 18, 2024.
Onanuga, via his official X handle, @aonanuga, at 3:31 PM, highlighted that President Tinubu also pledged to support the private sector and regional governments in meeting the new wage requirements. Additionally, the President vowed to address the demands of university unions regarding unpaid salaries for the past four months.
The Labour leaders expressed their appreciation for President Tinubu's commitment and proactive measures in addressing workers' concerns.
