Abuja, September 28, 2026 — The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretariat in Abuja today witnessed the defection of twelve House of Assembly candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the APC, in a significant political development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defectors, led by Princess Dr. Aslam Aliyu, a prominent youth mobiliser and former supporter of Atiku Abubakar, formally declared their decision to join the APC and pledged to deploy their political structures and grassroots networks in support of the party.
The decampees said their decision was motivated by what they described as patriotism, a desire to contribute to national development, and their assessment of the ongoing policies and development initiatives of the APC-led administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Princess Dr. Aslam Aliyu said the decision to join the APC was reached after extensive consultations with their supporters and political associates across their respective constituencies.
She said the group was prepared to work with the APC at all levels, mobilise young Nigerians and other voters, and contribute meaningfully to the party's grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
Receiving the defectors, the National Chairman of the APC, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, welcomed them into the party and described their decision as a demonstration of confidence in the APC and its leadership.
The National Chairman said the APC remained open to Nigerians who were willing to contribute to the development of the country and strengthen democratic participation.
Prof. Yilwatda urged the new members to see their decision not merely as a change of political platform but as a commitment to working with the party to serve Nigerians and strengthen its structures at the grassroots.
He said the APC would continue to welcome individuals and groups who share its commitment to national development, inclusive governance and democratic progress.
The National Chairman further charged the defectors to remain disciplined, committed and respectful of the party's internal processes, while urging them to bring their experience, networks and energy to bear in strengthening the APC.
He assured them that the party leadership would provide the necessary institutional framework for all members to contribute meaningfully to the party's programmes and activities.
The development further underscores the ongoing realignment of political structures ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the APC continuing its preparations and mobilisation across the country.
