Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has sparked conversation with a candid piece of marital advice, warning men against finding themselves in a position where they rely on their wives for daily sustenance.

The revered actor, known for his commanding presence both on screen and in public discourse, said men should strive to maintain their role as providers, arguing that dependence on a spouse for basic needs could expose them to emotional strain and loss of dignity.

Edochie made the remarks during an appearance on Curiosity Made Me Ask, an interview platform hosted by popular content creator Isbae U.

Drawing from his decades-long marital experience, the Nollywood icon said his views were shaped by nearly six decades of married life and the realities he has observed over the years.

According to him, marriage comes with responsibilities that should not be taken lightly, particularly the duty of a husband to provide for his family.

“I want you to listen properly. This is wisdom from somebody who has been in that institution for almost 60 years,” Edochie said during the interview.

The actor revealed that he has been married for 57 years, a milestone that places him among the longest-married public figures in Nigeria's entertainment industry.

Reflecting on the dynamics of marriage, he cautioned men against becoming financially dependent on their wives, claiming that such circumstances could attract ridicule and undermine a man's sense of self-worth.

“If things change and your wife has to feed you for two or three days, you would want to take poison. The kind of insult that will be heaped on you because your wife is feeding you, don’t ever think about it,” he said.

The veteran actor's comments have since generated debate on social media, with some agreeing that men should remain financially responsible for their households, while others argue that modern marriages thrive on partnership and mutual support, especially during periods of financial difficulty.

Edochie's remarks add to ongoing conversations about gender roles, family responsibilities and changing expectations within contemporary marriages, as economic realities continue to reshape traditional views on relationships and household leadership.

While opinions may differ on the issue, the actor's message was clear: men should work towards financial stability and avoid situations that leave them entirely dependent on their spouses for survival.
