The Federal University of Transportation, Daura, has secured the construction of the first Centre for Railway Signal & Communication in the whole of Africa and conducted a groundbreaking and foundation laying ceremony.

The groundbreaking and foundation laying ceremony for the construction of the centre were conducted by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Hon. Prof. Umar Adam Katsayal, mni, on Wednesday 22nd July 2026.
The construction of the centre was secured by the University under the leadership of the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Hon. Prof. Umar Adam Katsayal, mni, as part of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund’s (TETFund) 2026 Annual Intervention.
The centre will be the second Centre for Railway Signal & Communication in the whole world after that of China and the first in Africa.
It will be used for research in intelligent and smart transportation especially in Railway, Maritime, Aviation and Road. It can also monitor railway traffic within Nigeria and Africa.
Delivering his remarks before the official foundation laying, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Hon. Prof. Umar Adam Katsayal, mni, thanked the TETFund for its various interventions to the University and appreciated the contractor who mobilized to site before receiving any funding for the project.
He urged the contractor to maintain the tempo, requesting him and the consultant to ensure quality work while trying to meet up with the expected timeline for the completion of the project.
He said that, “while work is going on for the construction of the centre, the Chinese government is shipping the equipment to be installed and used in the centre”.
“All equipment to be used are to be donated by the China Railway Signal and Communication (CSRC) which was born out of a tripartite agreement signed in August 2025, between the company, the Federal Ministry of Transportation and the University”, the Vice-Chancellor said.
The Vice-Chancellor then officially unveiled the plaque for the construction of the centre by Yanduna Global Ventures Nig. Limited.
Speaking on behalf of the consulting and contracting company, the Consultant of the Project, Engr. Dr. Lawal Salisu, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for the confidence he reposed in them to carry out the construction of the historic project in the University.
He commended the Vice-Chancellor for his continued efforts to secure high impact projects for the young University, while assuring him of quality work.
Delivering a Goodwill Message, the Director Academic Planning and Monitoring, Prof. Ahmad Abubakar described the project as a world class project coming to Daura with the capacity of shaping the future of transportation education in the country.
He then congratulated the Governing Council, Management, Staff and Students for the project and applauded the Vice-Chancellor, Hon. Prof. Umar Adam Katsayal, mni, for securing it for the University.
He hoped that the project would be utilized judiciously and would transform Nigeria’s transportation industry.
