World Humanitarian Day is observed on August 19th each year. It commemorates the efforts of humanitarian workers who risk their lives to provide aid and assistance to those in need around the world. The day also serves to raise awareness about the importance of supporting and protecting civilians affected by conflicts, disasters, and emergencies. It was designated by the United Nations to honor the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, which resulted in the tragic loss of 22 lives, including UN envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello.
