The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has celebrated a Federal High Court ruling dismissing a suit challenging its leadership, describing the judgment as a strong affirmation of the party’s constitutionally recognised structure and internal democratic processes.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the court struck out the case for lack of jurisdiction, reinforcing the legal principle that leadership matters within political parties are internal affairs and not subject to judicial intervention.
According to the ADC, the ruling validates the emergence of its current leadership under the chairmanship of former Senate President, David Mark, which it said was conducted in full compliance with the party’s constitution and relevant Nigerian laws.
“This judgment affirms our clear position that the issue of leadership remains an internal affair of the party and is therefore not justiciable,” the statement read.
The opposition party further described the verdict as a victory for Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, expressing optimism that it would put an end to what it called needless distractions and attempts to weaken opposition politics through litigation.
ADC argued that the country’s pressing challenges—including insecurity, rising living costs, unemployment and shrinking economic opportunities—require credible policy alternatives and constructive political engagement rather than prolonged legal battles.
Despite the favourable judgment, the party said it would remain vigilant, warning that anti-democratic forces were still seeking ways to undermine democratic governance and opposition voices in the country.
The party also praised the presiding judge for what it described as a courageous and principled decision, particularly the award of costs against the plaintiff and legal representatives, noting that the move could serve as a deterrent against frivolous lawsuits.
ADC concluded by expressing gratitude to its members, supporters and Nigerians who stood by the party throughout the legal challenge, urging them to remain united and committed as it pursues its democratic agenda.
