Cape Verde head coach Bubista has vowed that his side will face defending champions Argentina with confidence and determination after making history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Blue Sharks secured a place in the Round of 32 following a hard-fought goalless draw against Saudi Arabia on Friday, becoming the smallest nation ever to reach the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup in their debut appearance at the tournament.

The West African side finished second in Group H with three points and emerged unbeaten from a challenging group that included Spain and Uruguay, underlining one of the competition’s biggest surprises.

Speaking after the historic qualification, Bubista admitted the achievement had exceeded expectations but said belief within the squad never wavered.

“It’s a bit of a shock, although we always believed there was a possibility of reaching this stage after the first two matches,” he said.

“We told the players they had to work hard and trust themselves because the reward would come. Today, that reward is here. The people of Cape Verde should be proud of what this team has achieved. It’s something truly incredible.”

Cape Verde’s reward is a daunting Round of 32 clash against Lionel Messi-led Argentina, but Bubista insists his team will not abandon the style and identity that carried them this far.

Facing the reigning world champions, he said, is both a challenge and a privilege.

“Argentina have Messi, a player who needs no introduction. It is an honour to play against a team of that calibre,” Bubista said.

“We represent our island nation, but we also represent Africa. That fills us with immense pride. We will approach the game with the right attitude, a sense of responsibility, and, most importantly, with our own personality and character.”

Having already captured global attention with their fairytale run, Cape Verde will now look to produce another upset when they take on Argentina in the Round of 32 on July 3 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
