Former Senator representing Ogun Central, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, has announced her resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing what she described as a lack of respect and recognition within the party.
Obasanjo made her decision public in a statement issued on Monday in Abeokuta, explaining that it came after extensive consultations and careful consideration of recent developments in the party.
The former lawmaker said she joined the APC with sincere intentions and devoted considerable effort to building and strengthening the party’s grassroots presence across Ogun Central and other parts of Ogun State.
She noted that throughout her governorship ambition, she remained committed to the principles of internal democracy, fairness and mutual respect. According to her, she embraced the party’s consensus arrangement in the interest of unity and subsequently worked cooperatively with the candidate selected by the party.
Despite these efforts, Obasanjo said her contributions, sacrifices and the aspirations of her supporters were not adequately acknowledged by the party leadership.
“After deep reflection and wide consultations, I have formally communicated my decision to resign my membership of the APC,” she stated.
Referencing the contents of her resignation letter, she added: “When disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table.”
Obasanjo, however, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and other leaders of the APC for the courtesies extended to her during her time in the party.
She reaffirmed her dedication to public service and pledged to continue pursuing justice, fairness and the development of Ogun State and Nigeria.
