President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, on his election as Chairman of the Fifth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, which oversees budgetary and administrative matters.
The President described the election as a significant achievement for Nigeria and a recognition of Ibrahim’s extensive experience in public service, diplomacy, business leadership and governance.
Tinubu’s congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by his spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga.
According to the President, Ibrahim’s emergence as chairman comes at a crucial time for the United Nations as the organisation undertakes major financial realignments and institutional reforms aimed at strengthening effectiveness, accountability and long-term sustainability.
“Your election to chair this important committee within weeks of your official resumption at the UN validates your wealth of experience in public service, diplomacy, business leadership and governance.
“It also reflects your contributions as a member of the Nigerian Senate Committee on Budget and Appropriation and Chairman of Inter-Parliamentary Relations,” Tinubu said.
The President noted that Ibrahim’s previous roles in both the private and public sectors have equipped him with the strategic leadership skills required to steer the committee effectively.
He further commended the ambassador’s academic and professional credentials, describing him as a respected legal scholar with expertise in international taxation and business administration.
Tinubu said Ibrahim had consistently demonstrated intellectual depth and a sound understanding of global governance and financial systems, qualities that would be invaluable in managing the committee’s responsibilities.
According to him, the ambassador’s experience offers valuable insights into fiscal management, institutional efficiency and sustainable growth.
The President expressed confidence that Ibrahim would justify the trust reposed in him by the international community and further enhance Nigeria’s image through his leadership of the committee.
He added that the appointment also affirmed the administration’s decision to designate Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
“I am confident that, just as the reforms at home are yielding positive results, Amb. Jimoh Ibrahim’s experience and unwavering commitment to excellence will justify his selection as our Permanent Representative and make Nigeria proud in the work of the Fifth Committee and in support of the broader objectives of the United Nations.
“Congratulations once again on this remarkable achievement and on the confidence reposed in you by the international community,” Tinubu said.
The Fifth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly is responsible for administrative and budgetary matters within the UN system.
The committee negotiates and approves the organisation’s regular budget, peacekeeping budgets and resource allocations, making it one of the most influential bodies within the UN framework.
