Residents of Mashi Local Government Area in Katsina State have expressed concern over a looming flood disaster following a prolonged downpour that affected the area on Sunday.

The rainfall, which lasted several hours on May 31, submerged major drainage channels and low-lying communities, while also triggering severe erosion in parts of the town.

Some residents  on Monday said the situation had heightened fears of flooding, particularly in settlements located near waterways and flood-prone areas.

A resident of Shema Quarters Housing Estate, Malam Umar Abubakar, said the rising water level during the rainfall posed a serious threat to homes and property.

“We fear that if the rain continues at this rate, many households may be displaced by flood,” he said.

In Unguwar Tsoma, residents lamented the recurring nature of flooding in the area, noting that the challenge has persisted for years and continues to endanger lives and property each rainy season.

Another resident, Malam Anas Rabiu, called on the Katsina State Government to urgently intervene by constructing proper drainage systems in vulnerable communities.

He listed Unguwar Tsoma Takalafiya, Unguwar Kashe Naira, Unguwar Sabon Layi, and Unguwar Gabas as areas most at risk.

“We are appealing to the governor to come to our aid before the situation worsens. Proper drainage systems are needed to protect lives and property,” he said.

Similarly, Abba Haruna urged both state and local authorities to clear blocked drainage channels and construct additional waterways to allow the free flow of rainwater.

“We are calling on the authorities to intervene before the situation gets out of hand,” he said.

In Unguwar Tsoma Takalafiya, Malama Hauwa’u Bishir reported that the rainfall had already caused noticeable erosion in parts of the community.

She said a section of a road had been washed away, while floodwater continued to encroach dangerously close to residential buildings.

According to her, failure to act promptly could result in further destruction of infrastructure and homes as the rainy season intensifies.

The residents collectively urged relevant authorities to take urgent and proactive measures to prevent a potential flood disaster and safeguard lives and property across affected communities.
