The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Katsina State was established shortly after the creation of Katsina State in 1987.
Whenever leadership elections are to be conducted, the union’s constitution provides for the establishment of an electoral body known as the Credentials Committee to oversee the process.
In 2026, a committee was constituted to conduct the election of the new state NUJ executives who were later sworn in.
The committee consisted of five members, including Abdullahi Muhammad known as TK, Rabiu Gslow, Hannatu Muhammad, and others.
According to investigations conducted by Katsina Times, this committee is considered the worst-performing Credentials Committee in the history of the NUJ based on the following reasons:
1, For the first time in the history of the NUJ anywhere in Nigeria, a state NUJ election was conducted without representation from the Ministry of Information. Their right to contest was allegedly denied through conspiracy and sabotage.
2, For the first time, debts were reportedly incurred just to organize the swearing-in ceremony, allegedly to avoid officially approaching the Ministry of Information to seek support from the state government because of what had allegedly been arranged against the ministry.
3,For the first time, a very short notice was given for the swearing-in ceremony, and the event was allegedly kept secret out of fear of possible reactions.
4,For the first time, neither the Commissioner for Information, the Director-General of Media, nor any government official connected to the information sector was invited.
4,For the first time, trustees of the state NUJ council were neither informed nor invited to the swearing-in ceremony.
5,For the first time, the new executives were not sworn in by a lawyer or a judge. Traditionally, lawyers or judges are invited to administer the oath of office during NUJ inaugurations.
6,For the first time, the event was conducted without inviting media organizations to cover the occasion.
7,For the first time, security agencies and their representatives were not invited to witness what was described as a successful NUJ election.
8,For the first time, members of the committee allegedly left the union in debt after concluding their assignment.
9,The history of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, according to the report, will never forget what happened or those who played roles in the events under the supervision of the acting chairman, Ismail Adamu.
