As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, a youth-based organisation, Political Youth Development, has intensified consultations with emerging political actors, including the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Katsina State.
The group, led by its chairman, Rabi’u Salihu, alongside its secretary, Nafi’u Alti, and women leader, Maryam Ya’u, paid a courtesy visit to the Katsina State Chairman of the NDC, Alhaji Aliyu Ilu Barde, at the party’s secretariat in the GRA area of Katsina metropolis on Sunday.
The visit, according to the delegation, was part of ongoing efforts to mobilise young people for active participation in politics and to explore avenues for collaboration with like-minded political platforms ahead of the next election cycle.
During the meeting, both sides engaged in extensive discussions on prevailing socio-political challenges in the state and the country at large, with a particular focus on the role of youths in shaping governance outcomes. The dialogue also provided an opportunity for the exchange of ideas and commitments aimed at strengthening political awareness and participation among young people.
Speaking during the engagement, Barde welcomed the group and commended its initiative, describing youth involvement as critical to the future of democratic governance in Nigeria. He urged young people to take a more proactive role in politics rather than remaining passive observers.
“The major challenge we face today, especially under what many describe as repressive governance, is the indifference of the youth. If young people unite and take responsibility, it will be difficult for any leadership to act outside the bounds of the law,” he said.
The NDC chairman further described his party as a platform built on principles of transparency and reform, calling on youths to join and contribute meaningfully to efforts aimed at reshaping governance.
“This is a new party founded on integrity and clear vision. We are calling on young people to come on board so that together we can challenge bad governance and build a system that works for all,” Barde added.
He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its outlined policies and programmes, noting that the NDC was focused on providing credible alternatives in the political landscape.
Earlier, the leader of the visiting group, Salihu, said the organisation was committed to fostering political consciousness among youths and encouraging them to participate actively in democratic processes, including decision-making and leadership.
Observers say such engagements underscore a growing trend of youth mobilisation and political realignment as various groups position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
