The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr. Ibrahim Shehu Shema, has called on port service providers to intensify efforts toward positioning Nigeria as a leading maritime hub in the region.

Shema made the call during a courtesy visit by members of the NSC Governing Board and top management, led by the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Akutah Pius, to Port Terminal Multi-Services Limited and Mediterranean Shipping Company in Lagos.

He highlighted the critical role of port operators in driving economic growth, stressing that sustained collaboration and operational efficiency are key to achieving Nigeria’s maritime ambitions.

The NSC chairman also noted the strategic importance of global shipping firms such as Grimaldi Group in enhancing port capacity and competitiveness.

He assured that the government would continue to provide an enabling environment to attract new investments and support existing operators in improving service delivery.

According to him, a more efficient and competitive port system would enhance trade facilitation for shippers, who are the primary users of maritime infrastructure.

In his remarks, Dr. Akutah said the visit was aimed at giving the Governing Board a clearer understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the sector.

He expressed confidence in continued collaboration among stakeholders to achieve the mandate set by the President.

The NSC boss commended the companies for their contributions to cargo throughput and service delivery, urging sustained investment in infrastructure and technology to improve efficiency.

He also stressed the need to strengthen transport connectivity in line with the African Continental Free Trade Area and called for the removal of bottlenecks hindering seamless regional trade.

The General Manager of PTML, Babatunde Keshinro, said the terminal has deployed automated systems to enhance operations, describing it as a key node in Nigeria’s cargo handling network.

Similarly, MSC Managing Director, Jacob Iosso, reaffirmed the company’s long-standing presence in Nigeria, noting it has operated in the country for over 15 years and contributed significantly to the economy, while pledging continued collaboration with the Council.
