From Zaharaddeen Ishaq Abubakar | Katsina Times , April 9, 2026
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commissioned a new branch secretariat at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina State, while calling on federal and state governments to expedite the implementation of the 2025 agreement reached with the union.
The commissioning ceremony, held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, attracted key stakeholders, including the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Salihu Muhammad, alongside academic and non-academic staff members.
Representing ASUU’s National President, Chris Piwuna, Professor Lawal Abubakar described the project as a significant institutional milestone, reflecting the collective commitment and solidarity of the UMYU branch.
He noted that the successful completion of the secretariat, despite operational and financial constraints, underscores the resilience and dedication of union members. According to him, the structure symbolizes not merely an administrative facility but a manifestation of unity, perseverance, and ideological commitment to the advancement of the union’s objectives.
The union also commended the leadership of the UMYU branch under its outgoing chairman, Dr. Murtala Abdullahi Kwara, as well as zonal leadership in Katsina, for ensuring the timely and efficient execution of the project.
Reiterating its long-standing position, ASUU emphasized that government authorities must engage the union as a strategic partner in national development rather than an adversary. It stressed that universities remain critical institutions for addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic and developmental challenges.
Furthermore, the union urged both federal and state governments to commence immediate implementation of the 2025 ASUU-government agreement, warning that the patience of its members is increasingly diminishing.
ASUU also called for a comprehensive review of the welfare provisions within the agreement to reflect prevailing economic realities. It maintained that improving the welfare of academic staff is a fundamental obligation necessary for ensuring quality teaching, impactful research, and effective community service.
The union encouraged its members to sustain their commitment to the struggle for improved standards in public universities, emphasizing the broader implications for students’ futures and national development.
The newly commissioned secretariat is expected to serve as a central hub for union activities and to strengthen advocacy efforts aimed at enhancing the quality of higher education in Nigeria.
