Nigeria’s Falconets produced one of their most convincing performances of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland on Thursday, brushing aside England 3-0 to book a place in the quarter-finals and keep their title dream alive.

The Nigerian side combined attacking flair, defensive discipline and outstanding goalkeeping to overpower the Young Lionesses in a thrilling Round-of-16 clash at the Bielsko-Biała Stadium.

Tosin Rafiu set the tone for victory with a moment of brilliance in the opening stages of the match. The midfielder seized possession high up the pitch, surged past defenders and calmly finished into the far corner to hand Nigeria an early advantage after just eight minutes.

England attempted to fight their way back into the contest and were handed a golden opportunity to restore parity when they won a penalty midway through the first half. However, Falconets captain and goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma rose to the occasion, producing a superb save to deny Rachel Maltby from the spot and preserve Nigeria’s lead. Her heroics between the posts proved crucial as England piled on pressure before the break.

The Falconets returned from halftime with renewed intensity and wasted little time extending their advantage. Just two minutes into the second half, Janet Akekoromowe reacted quickest to a loose ball from a corner situation and fired home to make it 2-0, leaving England with a mountain to climb.

With the Europeans pushing forward in search of a comeback, Nigeria remained dangerous on the counterattack. The game was effectively put beyond doubt in the 73rd minute when Mary Mmadu finished off a well-worked move after an interception high up the pitch, sealing an emphatic victory for the West Africans.

The result extends Nigeria’s unbeaten record against England at this level and marks another significant milestone for a team that has steadily grown into the tournament after a difficult start. The Falconets recovered from an opening defeat to Spain, battled to a draw against China and then announced themselves with a record-breaking 10-1 demolition of New Caledonia before eliminating England in style.

The victory also sends Nigeria into the quarter-finals of the competition for the ninth time in history, underlining the country’s status as one of the most successful teams in the tournament’s history. It is their first appearance in the last eight since the 2022 edition.

Coach Moses Aduku’s side will now shift attention to the quarter-final showdown on September 20, where they will face the winner of the clash between hosts Poland and Colombia for a place in the semi-finals.
