The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched a two-day strategic communication workshop for Heads of Voter Education and Publicity (VEP) from its 36 state offices and the FCT as part of preparations for the 2027 General Election.
Opening the workshop in Abuja, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the training is aimed at equipping communication officers with the skills to counter misinformation and disinformation, strengthen voter education and boost public confidence in the electoral process.
Haruna disclosed that INEC expects to consolidate a voter register of over 100 million Nigerians following the recently suspended Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, highlighting the enormous task ahead as political campaigns officially commence.
He also urged Nigerians not to blame low voter turnout solely on INEC, stressing that political parties have a responsibility to mobilise voters while improving internal democracy.
Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi, said the workshop would strengthen the capacity of state communication officers to effectively manage election information, tackle fake news and deliver accurate, timely and credible public communication ahead of the January 16, 2027 general election.
Eta-Messi also commended the workshop's resource persons, Prof. Okey Ikechukwu and Mr. Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, describing them as seasoned communication professionals whose expertise will enhance participants' capacity as effective voter education practitioners.
The workshop features sessions on voter education, legal literacy, INEC's communication policy, combating misinformation and best practices for official election communication
