X Shuts Down Revenue Sharing, Unveils New Monetisation Model for Creators

Social media platform X has announced a major overhaul of its creator monetisation system, bringing an end to its revenue-sharing programme and replacing it with a new initiative designed to reward original content creators.

The move marks one of the most significant changes to creator earnings on the platform since Elon Musk transformed Twitter into X and introduced various monetisation opportunities aimed at attracting and retaining content creators.

In a statement released on Friday, X revealed that its existing Revenue Sharing Programme will officially be discontinued in September, paving the way for the launch of the Original Content Rewards Program, a scheme the company says will place greater emphasis on originality, engagement and meaningful contributions to conversations.

The platform explained that the new system is intended to recognise creators whose content drives discussions, shapes trends and keeps users actively engaged.

According to the company, the transition reflects a broader strategy to reward value creation rather than simply content visibility.

“People come to X for real-time information, unique perspectives, expert analysis and conversations that influence culture and public discourse,” the company said while announcing the change.

Under the new arrangement, creators who consistently produce authentic and impactful content will have the opportunity to earn rewards through a framework specifically designed around originality.

X confirmed that users currently participating in the Revenue Sharing Programme will continue receiving earnings until September 7, 2026, after which the scheme will be formally retired.

The company added that final payments under the outgoing programme are scheduled to be processed on September 11, 2026.

Applications for the new monetisation programme will open a day later, on September 8, allowing eligible creators to transition into the new system.

Creators interested in joining the initiative will be able to verify their eligibility through the platform’s Creator Studio, where a dedicated section for the Original Content Rewards Program will be available.

To simplify the process, X said users who have already completed identity verification and linked valid payment accounts will not be required to repeat those steps when applying.

Once approved, creators will automatically begin earning under the terms of the new programme.

While the company has yet to disclose the exact formula for calculating rewards, it indicated that the focus will be on encouraging authentic content that sparks conversations and adds value to the platform’s ecosystem.

The announcement signals a shift in X’s approach to creator monetisation, moving away from a model largely tied to advertising revenue and toward one that places greater emphasis on content quality and originality.

Since introducing monetisation tools for creators, X has sought to position itself as a competitive destination for journalists, analysts, entertainers, influencers and independent content creators looking to generate income from their audiences.

The company said the latest change is rooted in its belief that the platform’s success is driven by users who share information, insights, experiences and commentary that cannot be found elsewhere.

By redesigning its rewards structure, X hopes to encourage more creators to produce distinctive content while strengthening user engagement across the platform.

The transition is expected to affect thousands of creators worldwide who currently rely on revenue-sharing payments, with many now closely watching for further details on how the new reward system will operate and how earnings will be determined under the revamped model.
