Atiku Raises Alarm Over Mysterious Deposit Into Private Bank Account, Alleges Possible Data Breach

Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed concern over an unexplained transfer into one of his private bank accounts, describing the development as suspicious and potentially threatening to the privacy and security of Nigerians.

Atiku disclosed that the transaction, labelled “Contribution Electioneering Campaign”, was made by an individual unknown to him and without the knowledge, approval or request of either himself or his political campaign.

The former vice-president made his position known in a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.

According to the statement, the bank account involved is strictly private, with its details not publicly available, raising questions about how the sender gained access to the confidential information.

“The transfer originated from a person totally unknown to His Excellency. Neither His Excellency nor his campaign solicited, authorised or has any knowledge of the individual or entity behind the unauthorised payment,” the statement said.

Atiku described the circumstances surrounding the transaction as “deeply troubling”, insisting that the incident goes beyond a simple bank transfer and touches on broader concerns about the security of personal financial information in the country.

Questioning how an unknown individual obtained the account details, he warned that if the banking information of a former vice-president and leading presidential contender could be accessed without authorisation, ordinary Nigerians may be even more vulnerable.

“The account is a strictly private one whose details are not in the public domain. This raises a fundamental question: How did unknown persons obtain the confidential banking details of a private citizen?” he asked.

The ADC presidential candidate further argued that the incident could point to a more serious breach involving individuals with privileged access to sensitive information.

According to him, if such access is proven, it would represent a dangerous abuse of power capable of exposing citizens to criminal threats, including kidnapping, terrorism, banditry and financial fraud.

“Atiku expressed concern that the account details may have been obtained by individuals with privileged access. If established, this would amount to a grave abuse of power capable of exposing the account holder to kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, fraudsters and other criminal elements,” the statement added.

The former vice-president also linked the development to what he described as a pattern of suspicious activities emerging ahead of the 2027 general election.

Despite the controversy, Atiku maintained that the incident would not distract him from his political ambitions or his plans for the next electoral cycle.

“As political activities gather momentum, Nigerians should not be distracted by these tired tactics that smack of character assassination,” he said.

“Such desperate antics have failed before and will fail again. The Waziri Adamawa remains focused on offering Nigerians credible leadership and practical solutions to the nation’s challenges.”

The incident is expected to fuel fresh debate over data privacy, banking security and the protection of personal information as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to intensify.
