The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Katsina State Council, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have pledged to deepen collaboration aimed at improving the welfare and working conditions of journalists and other workers across the state.

The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the NUJ leadership, led by its Chairman, Aminu Dandagoro, to the Chairman of the NLC in Katsina State, Dr. Hussaini Yanduna, on Friday.

Speaking during the meeting, Dandagoro said the visit was part of efforts to reinforce the long-standing relationship between both unions and explore areas of partnership that would address challenges confronting workers, especially media professionals.

He emphasized the critical role journalists play in sustaining democratic values, promoting transparency, and holding public institutions accountable, noting that the profession requires stronger support and better welfare packages to enable practitioners perform effectively.

According to him, the media remains a key pillar of society, and journalists deserve improved working conditions that reflect the importance of their contributions to governance and national development.

Dandagoro also lauded the NLC for its unwavering commitment to defending workers’ rights and advancing their interests, expressing confidence that closer cooperation between the two organisations would deliver meaningful benefits for journalists and the broader workforce.

In his response, Yanduna reaffirmed the labour movement’s readiness to work hand in hand with the NUJ in championing initiatives that enhance the welfare and professional wellbeing of journalists in Katsina State.

The NLC chairman described journalists as strategic allies in the struggle for workers’ rights, noting that their ability to inform, educate, and mobilise the public has remained instrumental to the success of labour campaigns and advocacy efforts.

He stressed that the labour movement values the contributions of the media and would continue to support programmes and policies aimed at improving the lives and careers of journalists.

The meeting underscored a shared commitment by both unions to strengthen solidarity, protect workers’ interests, and create a more supportive environment for journalists and other employees in Katsina State.
