The Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Malam Ali M. Ali, has called on journalists to uphold professionalism, objectivity and neutrality in their coverage of political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ali made the call on Wednesday while briefing journalists on the sidelines of a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Jigawa State, Aminu Usman, in Dutse.
He stressed the importance of factual, balanced and fair reporting, noting that the credibility of journalism depends largely on adherence to ethical standards.
“As reporters, our duty is to remain neutral, report all sides and ensure fairness without prejudice to anyone,” he said.
The NAN Managing Director described journalism as a noble profession that requires discipline, integrity and commitment, warning media practitioners against partisan tendencies as political activities gather momentum across the country.
“The political season is here, and journalists need to be thorough and professional in carrying out their responsibilities,” he said.
Ali also drew a distinction between mainstream journalism and citizen journalism, expressing concern over what he described as growing irresponsibility on social media platforms.
“Citizen journalism has given rise to irresponsibility, especially on social media. That is why the mainstream media must be very circumspect, uphold the ethics of the profession and avoid sensationalism,” he said.
The NAN helmsman said his visit to Jigawa was part of efforts to inspect the agency’s facilities in Dutse and engage with members of staff.
He observed that Jigawa was becoming increasingly attractive to investors, particularly in the agricultural sector, citing its peaceful environment and functional airport as major advantages.
“Jigawa is now seen as a destination for investors and agriculturalists. It has a functional airport and enjoys relative peace,” he said.
Ali also commended the state government for sustaining political stability and harmonious leadership.
“There is coordination between the number one and number two citizens of the state, which is quite commendable,” he added.
Addressing newly recruited staff of the agency, Ali urged them to remain dedicated and committed to excellence in their careers.
“There is no shortcut to success. You cannot take a lift to success; you have to patiently climb the steps,” he said.
He encouraged the young journalists to remain focused, disciplined and professional in the discharge of their duties.
In her remarks, the NAN State Correspondent in Jigawa, Mrs Aisha Ahmed, commended the performance of the newly recruited staff, describing them as fast learners with a strong commitment to duty.
According to her, each of the new employees has already had stories published in various daily newspapers, reflecting their dedication and potential.
Ahmed expressed confidence that the young journalists would continue to contribute meaningfully to the growth of NAN and the journalism profession.
