Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to renewable energy as a key strategy to reduce hardship, improve public services, and promote economic development.
This was highlighted during a strategic meeting held at the Government House with the Chairman of Genesis Energy Group, Mr. Akinwole Omoboriowo II, and his team. The visit focused on assessing ongoing solar projects and expanding clean energy initiatives across the state.
So far, the collaboration has seen the successful installation of a 1MW solar mini-grid powering the Government House with 12 hours of daily electricity. Similarly, a 300KW solar PV system now supplies reliable power to the General Hospital, Katsina—improving healthcare delivery and drastically reducing dependence on diesel generators.
Governor Radda commended the company’s work, describing the impact of the initial projects as transformative.
“The General Hospital now enjoys consistent power, which is crucial for quality healthcare delivery. Likewise, Government House benefits from 12 hours of uninterrupted electricity every day,” he said.
He further stressed that the renewable energy partnership goes beyond infrastructure, saying reliable electricity is fundamental in tackling poverty and empowering local enterprises, schools, and health centres.
“Energy security is vital to reducing the everyday challenges faced by our people. It is also essential to building a sustainable and inclusive economy,” the Governor stated.
He also noted the environmental impact, pointing out that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan and the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.
Chairman of Genesis Energy, Akinwole Omoboriowo II, announced plans to expand solar mini-grid installations to key areas, including the Green Economic Zone along Jibia Road and Lambar Rimi, which hosts Katsina's wind farm.
“Our goal is to accelerate access to clean energy, boost industrial productivity, and align with the objectives of the Electricity Act 2024,” Omoboriowo said.
Also present at the meeting were Special Adviser to the Governor on Power and Energy, Dr. Hafiz Ahmed; Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Abba Jaye; and the General Manager of the Rural Electrification Board, Engr. Abdullahi Abubakar Matazu.
The ongoing partnership is expected to play a pivotal role in reshaping Katsina’s energy landscape, promoting sustainability, and creating jobs for its growing population.
