President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to fast-track the passage of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) Amendment Bill, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen the management and governance of public senior secondary education across the country.
The president’s request was conveyed in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during plenary on Thursday.
In the correspondence, Tinubu urged lawmakers to give prompt consideration to the proposed legislation, describing it as a critical step toward improving the administration of Nigeria’s senior secondary education system.
According to the president, the amendment bill is designed to enhance the effectiveness of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission and reinforce the governance framework guiding public secondary schools nationwide.
Tinubu noted that the proposed amendment had already received the approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) during its meeting on April 30, paving the way for its transmission to the National Assembly.
He further explained that following FEC’s approval, the Federal Ministry of Justice undertook the necessary legal drafting processes, gazetted the bill, and ensured it complied with constitutional and legislative standards before forwarding it to the Senate.
The president emphasized that the move aligns with his administration’s broader commitment to strengthening educational institutions and improving learning outcomes in the country.
He expressed confidence that senators would give the bill the urgent attention it deserves and facilitate its speedy passage in the national interest.
Following the presentation of the letter, Senate President Akpabio referred the proposed legislation to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative action.
The committee was subsequently directed to review the bill and submit its report to the Senate within one week, setting the stage for accelerated consideration of the proposed education reform measure.
