Residents across the Funtua Zone of Katsina State have expressed optimism following the deployment of additional police personnel and operational equipment aimed at tackling the persistent threat of banditry in the area.

The move comes after the Katsina State Police Command announced the reinforcement of security operations in the zone with more officers and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs). The deployment is targeted at strengthening security in communities across Funtua, Dandume and Sabuwa Local Government Areas, which have witnessed recurring attacks by armed groups in recent months.

For many residents, the announcement has rekindled hope that authorities are beginning to respond more aggressively to the security challenges that have disrupted daily life, farming activities and local businesses.

In Tumburkai village of Dandume Local Government Area, residents said they were eager to see a stronger security presence, particularly in remote communities that have remained vulnerable to attacks.

A resident, Malam Abubakar Musa, described the situation in the area as deeply troubling, noting that many villagers still spend sleepless nights protecting themselves from possible attacks.

According to him, despite Tumburkai being one of the largest communities in Dandume, residents often rely on local vigilante groups and volunteers for protection whenever gunmen strike.

He appealed to security authorities to extend operations beyond major towns and highways, stressing that rural communities require urgent attention to restore confidence and normalcy.

Similar concerns were raised by another resident of Dandume, Malam Yusuf Ibrahim, who pointed to what he described as an inadequate number of security personnel available to confront bandits across the affected areas.

He welcomed the latest deployment and expressed hope that the reinforcements would soon be felt in villages that continue to experience security threats.

In neighbouring Sabuwa Local Government Area, farmers said insecurity has severely affected agricultural activities, preventing many from accessing their farmlands.

One of the farmers, Malam Sagir Inuwa, lamented that fear of attacks has forced many residents to stay away from their farms, with devastating consequences for livelihoods and food production.

He expressed hope that the arrival of more security personnel would improve safety and allow farmers to return to their fields without fear.

Another resident, Malam Garba Adamu, also welcomed the development, describing it as a positive step toward restoring peace in the area. He, however, urged community members to cooperate fully with security agencies by providing useful information that could aid ongoing operations.

In Funtua Local Government Area, traders and residents also applauded the police initiative, while calling for additional support from other security agencies.

A trader from Dandaji community, Bello Idris, praised the efforts of the police and security authorities during recent attacks in the area, noting that their swift intervention helped to prevent further destruction.

While acknowledging the progress made, he appealed to the government to deploy more specialised security personnel to strengthen ongoing operations and sustain pressure on criminal elements.

Alhaji Lawal Abbas echoed similar sentiments, commending the deployment and calling on government authorities, traditional leaders, security agencies and residents to work together in the fight against banditry.

Residents believe that while the latest reinforcement is a welcome development, lasting peace will require sustained security operations, stronger intelligence gathering and a greater presence of security forces in rural communities that remain at the frontline of the security crisis.

For many communities in the Funtua Zone, the deployment represents more than just an increase in personnel and equipment, it is a renewed hope that normal life, farming and economic activities can gradually return after years of living under the shadow of insecurity.
