At least three persons have been confirmed dead and 75 others injured following a serious road accident near Maiyama in Kebbi State.

The accident, which occurred on Thursday, April 16, prompted Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to activate its mass casualty response plan at the General Hospital in Maiyama.

MSF said its medical teams have so far treated 57 patients, while 26 others with severe injuries were referred to higher-level health facilities for advanced care.

The organisation noted that several victims arrived at the hospital in critical condition, putting pressure on available medical resources.

“Some patients arrived in critical condition, and the hospital has been overwhelmed. We have been doing everything possible to support the medical team by stabilising and treating those with the most severe injuries,” said Huggings Madondo, MSF Project Coordinator in Kebbi.

According to MSF, its presence at Maiyama General Hospital since March 2022 has strengthened the facility’s capacity to respond to emergencies.

The organisation has been supporting the hospital mainly through malnutrition intervention programmes, a partnership it said has enhanced the quality of care and emergency response capabilities.

Efforts are ongoing to ensure that all affected victims receive adequate medical attention.
