The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has been honoured with the Media Promoter and Advocate of Press Freedom Award by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in recognition of his consistent support for media freedom and responsible journalism.
The award was presented at the NUJ’s 70th Anniversary Gala/Award Night held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. The event marked a major milestone in the union’s history, featuring a keynote address, book launch, and the conferment of honours on individuals who have significantly contributed to media development and democratic values in Nigeria.
The award, presented by the Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Jatau, was received on behalf of the CGC by the National Public Relations Officer of the Service, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada.
Speaking at the event, AC Maiwada described the honour as a reflection of CGC Adeniyi’s communication-driven leadership style and openness to the media.
“This recognition is a profound honour for the Nigeria Customs Service, and it speaks volumes about the kind of leadership we have under CGC Adewale Adeniyi,” he stated. “As a communications professional, he understands the crucial role of the media in fostering transparency, accountability, and strengthening democratic institutions.”
Maiwada further noted that under Adeniyi’s leadership, the Customs Service has significantly improved its engagement with the media and the public, thereby building trust and reinforcing institutional credibility.
“The CGC has empowered Public Relations Officers across various commands to operate with professionalism and transparency. This award will only motivate us to do more in supporting journalists and maintaining open communication in line with global best practices,” he added.
Also recognised at the event was retired Customs officer and traditional ruler, the Kanwan Katsina, Comptroller UK Bello, who received the Media Support Award for his legacy of fostering strong media relations throughout his service. Bello, who served as a Public Relations Officer for nearly a decade and later as an Area Controller, was applauded for his openness and dedication to media advancement.
In his remarks, Kanwan Katsina expressed gratitude to the NUJ for the honour and praised CGC Adeniyi for sustaining reforms in the Service.
“I dedicate this award to all officers who believe in the power of communication and thank the CGC for his leadership,” he said.
The NUJ’s 70th Anniversary celebration served not only as a moment of reflection on the union’s journey but also as a reaffirmation of the critical role of the press in shaping Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
