The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has assured Nigerian pilgrims currently in Saudi Arabia that plans are in full swing to expedite their return journey home. According to the Commission, efforts are being made in collaboration with State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards and the 2025 official air carriers to ensure all pilgrims are returned to Nigeria by 28th June 2025.
In a statement issued by Fatima Sanda Usara, Assistant Director of Information and Publication, NAHCON attributed the current delay in the return airlift to heavy air traffic associated with peak season operations in Saudi Arabia. The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) in Saudi Arabia, which manages airport slots, has not allocated Nigeria enough landing slots to immediately accommodate its large number of returning pilgrims.
As a result, the three key stakeholders involved in the airlift operation have begun implementing strategies to secure more flight slots. It is expected that ongoing discussions with the Saudi authorities will lead to an increase in flight allocations for Nigeria.
Currently, FlyNas remains the only airline operating two flights daily. NAHCON disclosed that plans are underway to secure more favorable flight slots for other carriers, including UMZA Aviation, Air Peace, and Max Air. With the involvement of large-bodied aircraft, the Commission anticipates a significant acceleration in the return process, with more flights expected to take off daily.
The Commission expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding of pilgrims and officials and reassured the public that all stakeholders are working tirelessly to ensure a smooth and speedy return for all Nigerian pilgrims.
