The game of Polo in Katsina, once an exclusive pastime of colonial officers, has evolved into a symbol of cultural identity and heritage in Northern Nigeria. Since its introduction in the early colonial era, Polo has remained deeply rooted in the state's history, largely due to the efforts of notable traditional rulers and key figures who nurtured and promoted the sport.
The first major step toward institutionalising Polo in Katsina was taken in June 1924, when Captain Sheridan officially proposed the formation of a Polo club. With the support of Sidney Hogben—an experienced player from Sokoto—alongside other colonial administrators like Mr. Hamlyn and Mr. Norwood, the foundation of Katsina Polo was laid.
The then Emir of Katsina, Muhammadu Dikko, welcomed the initiative and encouraged his sons, Usman Nagogo and Yusuf Lamba, to join the club. Both were accomplished horsemen and played significant roles in popularising Polo in Katsina and beyond.
Usman Nagogo, who later became the 16th Emir of Katsina in 1944, transformed Polo into more than just a sport. He viewed it as a tool for diplomacy, cultural promotion, and a source of pride for the Katsina Emirate. His remarkable Polo skills gained recognition across Africa and internationally, including participation in matches in the United Kingdom—making him one of Nigeria’s earliest global Polo ambassadors.
Under his leadership, Katsina rose to prominence as Nigeria’s Polo capital. He established the Katsina Polo Ground, one of the oldest and most prestigious in Africa, hosting numerous national and international tournaments that boosted local economy and tourism.
Emir Nagogo also institutionalised annual Polo tournaments, attracting elite players from across Nigeria and neighbouring countries. The sport became not only a cultural activity but also an economic engine for the state.
Following his death in 1981, his son and successor, Emir Muhammadu Kabir Usman, continued this legacy. He maintained and upgraded the Katsina Polo Ground, supported youth development in the sport, and led the team in national and international competitions. Modern facilities, quality horses, and skilled players emerged under his reign, keeping Katsina Polo at the forefront.
Today, Polo remains a key cultural and tourism attraction in Katsina, especially during festivities such as Eid celebrations and Hawan Bariki. The current Emir, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, has also sustained support for Polo, ensuring the tradition remains alive among younger generations.
Key players who contributed to the sport’s legacy in Katsina include:
As Katsina continues to preserve its legacy in Polo, stakeholders have called on the Katsina State Government under Governor Malam Dikko Umar Radda to invest in modernising the sport. By improving facilities, training young players, and promoting international events, Polo can further enhance the state’s cultural identity and economic prospects.
