The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Katsina State has raised objections to the guidelines issued by the Katsina State Independent Electoral Commission (KTSIEC) for the upcoming 2025 local government council elections. The election is scheduled for February 15, 2025.
In a press release dated June 21, 2024, the SDP condemned the new conditions set by KTSIEC, describing them as illegal and retrogressive. The party specifically criticized the imposition of non-refundable fees of N3 million for chairmanship candidates and N1 million for councilor candidates, arguing that these fees are designed to exclude capable candidates from participating in the elections.
SDP's Katsina State Chairman, Bello Adamu Safana, stated that the party has sought legal interpretation to determine the legitimacy of KTSIEC's guidelines. The party believes these conditions violate the democratic principles enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Safana emphasized that the SDP's legal challenge is motivated by a desire to ensure a robust local government system capable of addressing economic and security challenges. He also highlighted the need for fair participation of all political parties in the local council elections.
The Katsina State High Court has scheduled a hearing for the case on June 24, 2024.
