In an Extraordinary Session convened in Abuja, Nigeria, on February 24, 2024, the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) addressed critical issues pertaining to the political, peace, and security situation in the West African region. The summit, chaired by H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and ECOWAS Authority Chairperson, brought together key leaders to deliberate on the region's challenges.

Key Resolutions and Discussions:

1. Situation in Niger: The summit discussed the political situation in Niger since the military takeover in July 2023, emphasizing the need for the release of former President Mohamed Bazoum and the importance of adherence to constitutional principles.

2. Withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from ECOWAS: The Authority expressed concern over the decision of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to withdraw from ECOWAS, highlighting the socio-economic, political, security, and humanitarian impacts. The leaders urged the countries to reconsider their decision and engage in dialogue.

3. Sanctions: The summit decided to lift sanctions imposed on Niger, including the closure of borders and a no-fly zone. Additionally, financial and economic sanctions on Guinea were lifted. The Authority stressed the importance of maintaining other measures in accordance with regional and continental protocols.

4. Senegal's Presidential Election: The summit acknowledged the end of President Macky Sall’s term and called for a free, inclusive, and transparent presidential election in Senegal, emphasizing the need for dialogue among stakeholders.

5. African Development, Sovereignty, and Unity: The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to Africa’s sovereignty, independence, and unity. They called on international partners to respect the sovereignty of African states and avoid destabilizing interventions.

6. Appreciation: The Authority expressed gratitude to General Yakubu Gowon for his contributions and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership in conducting ECOWAS affairs.

The summit concluded with a call for continued efforts to address regional challenges and promote stability, unity, and development in West Africa.
