Humanitarian Minister Celebrates Obong of Calabar's 15th Anniversary, Unveils Christmas Grants for the Very Poor

In a distinguished display of cultural celebration, Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, graced the 15th coronation anniversary of the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V. The event, held at Adiabo, marked the annual Utomo Obong festival, showcasing the rich Efik cultural heritage.

Amidst the festivities, Dr. Edu congratulated the Obong on his milestone and commended the unity he fosters among his people. She expressed delight in attending the Utomo Obong for 2023, emphasizing the importance of sharing culture, good times, and renewed hope for the people of Cross River State.

In a message from President Bola Tinubu, Dr. Edu reiterated the commitment to eradicate poverty in Nigeria. She announced the launch of Christmas grants for the very poor and vulnerable groups in Cross River, scheduled to commence on Christmas Day in collaboration with the state government.

"President Tinubu has directed that smiles be put on the faces of the poor and vulnerable in the grassroots this Christmas season," Dr. Edu affirmed. The funds aim to empower recipients to start micro-businesses, contributing to sustainable family support and poverty alleviation.

Highlighting the President's special focus on Cross River, the Minister unveiled a comprehensive package for the state and others across the country, set to be unveiled throughout the coming year. She assured that the Ministry has meticulously identified beneficiaries through collaboration with traditional rulers, reaching out to communities, wards, and villages in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
