FG Begins N50,000 Monthly Relief Payments: Who Qualifies, How To Receive The Money And What Nigerians Must Know

As the Federal Government begins rolling out a new N50,000 monthly financial support programme for poor and vulnerable households, questions are emerging over who will receive the money, how beneficiaries will be identified and whether Nigerians need to register to qualify.

The intervention, introduced amid rising food prices and the increasing cost of basic necessities, is expected to provide some financial relief to households struggling with the country's rising cost of living.

Announcing the initiative on Friday, October 30, 2026, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, said the government had commenced the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), under which eligible households would receive N50,000 monthly.

Unlike conventional government empowerment programmes that require prospective beneficiaries to complete applications, the new initiative will rely on existing national databases to identify those considered eligible for assistance.

Who stands to benefit from the N50,000?

The programme is primarily targeted at poor and economically vulnerable Nigerians whose ability to afford food and other essential household items has been affected by rising prices.

According to information published on the programme's official website, the government intends to provide immediate financial assistance to households facing economic difficulties, helping them meet their basic needs.

However, the intervention is not designed as a general payment for every Nigerian. Only households identified and verified through the government's beneficiary selection process will qualify.

How will the government identify beneficiaries?

Prospective beneficiaries will not be selected through a first-come, first-served arrangement.

Instead, the government will use verified national identity records alongside information contained in the National Social Register to identify households that meet the programme's poverty and vulnerability requirements.

The information will subsequently undergo screening and verification before eligible households are selected for payment.

The government says the exercise will be guided by the level of need, with beneficiaries receiving assistance in different batches.

Where will the N50,000 come from, and how will it reach beneficiaries?

To ensure that the money reaches selected households, the Federal Government has partnered with three licensed digital financial service providers.

They include ALAT by Wema Bank, MoMo Payment Service Bank (PSB) and NairaGram.

Under the arrangement, beneficiaries will receive their payments through mobile wallets connected to their phone numbers and National Identification Numbers (NIN).

Those who receive the money will be able to withdraw it through banks and Point of Sale (POS) agents or use the funds directly from their wallets to purchase goods and pay for essential services.

The payment arrangement also makes provision for Nigerians without smartphones or mobile internet access, as they can use the USSD option to access the service.

Do Nigerians need to register or pay to qualify?

One of the most important things prospective beneficiaries need to understand is that NERSI does not require members of the public to submit applications or pay registration fees.

The government has warned against individuals and agents demanding money from Nigerians under the pretence of securing them a place on the beneficiary list.

According to the programme's official website, selected households will be contacted directly through SMS messages sent by one of the approved payment providers.

The message will seek the beneficiary's consent before the money is credited to their mobile wallet. Those selected are expected to follow the instructions provided in the notification to accept the payment.

This means that Nigerians should be cautious of unofficial registration links, individuals demanding processing fees or messages promising guaranteed access to the N50,000 intervention.

When will payments begin, and how long will the programme last?

Although the Federal Government announced the commencement of NERSI on October 30, 2026, it has yet to release a detailed payment schedule indicating when individual beneficiaries or batches will receive their money.

The government has only confirmed that disbursement will take place in phases, meaning selected households may receive their notifications at different times.

There is also no confirmed end date for the intervention.

Doro said the programme would undergo periodic reviews to reflect changes in the cost of living, adding that beneficiaries would be informed directly before any adjustments were introduced.

However, the minister did not specify how many months the N50,000 payments would continue or when the intervention would officially end.

A familiar approach to social welfare

The latest intervention is not the first attempt by the Federal Government to provide direct financial assistance to economically disadvantaged households.

In 2016, the government, working with the World Bank, introduced the National Social Safety Nets Project (NASSP) as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria's social protection system and provide targeted support to people living in poverty.

One of its major components was the National Cash Transfer Programme, which provided financial assistance to eligible households identified through the National Social Register.

NERSI represents another federal intervention built around targeted financial support, with the government seeking to ease the pressure of rising living costs on households most affected by the economic situation.

For millions of Nigerians hoping to benefit, the major issues now are when the first payment notifications will arrive, how many households will be covered and how consistently the government will sustain the monthly N50,000 assistance.
