The Management of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, has condemned an alleged assault on one of its security personnel at the university’s main entrance gate.
The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m., following a disagreement between the security personnel and an individual who identified himself as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
According to the university, the individual was denied access to the campus because he was driving a dark-tinted Hilux vehicle without a number plate, which the institution said was contrary to its established security regulations governing entry into the campus.
The university’s Director of Security, CC Mansur Garba (rtd), reportedly said the individual became confrontational after he was subsequently prevented from leaving the campus. He had allegedly earlier passed the security guards after being asked to stop at the gate.
The confrontation reportedly caused traffic congestion at the university entrance, while some people were affected by tear gas allegedly sprayed by the individual. The university said the person allegedly emptied an entire spray can into the face of one of the security guards.
The individual was subsequently removed from his vehicle by security personnel, while his examination card and the spray can were seized, according to the statement.
The university management described the alleged conduct as serious, stressing that its security personnel were carrying out their assigned responsibilities in enforcing campus security regulations.
It reiterated that the institution has zero tolerance for violence, intimidation, threats, assault or any form of misconduct against its staff and students.
The management further disclosed that it was taking appropriate steps to establish the facts surrounding the incident and would cooperate with relevant authorities where necessary to ensure that the matter was addressed in accordance with the law.
It also appealed for calm and urged all concerned to allow the appropriate authorities to investigate the incident and take necessary action based on established facts.
