The Aliko Dangote Foundation has strengthened its commitment to youth empowerment and economic development in Northern Nigeria following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kano State Government to assume the management of the Aliko Dangote Skills Acquisition Centre in Kano.

The agreement will see the Foundation oversee the operations of the multi-million-naira facility for several years, implementing programmes designed to equip young people with practical technical, digital and industrial skills needed to thrive in today’s economy.

The development marks another milestone in the Foundation’s growing investment in human capital development across the country. It also comes as the organisation recently completed a similar skills acquisition centre in Ganaja, Kogi State, which is expected to be commissioned soon.

Stakeholders have described the initiative as a major step towards tackling youth unemployment and promoting self-reliance among young Nigerians.

Chairman of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Kano-Jigawa Branch, Muhammad Bello Isyaku Umar, said the intervention would have far-reaching benefits for the region, noting that skills development remains one of the most effective tools for addressing unemployment and poverty.

According to him, programmes such as the Aliko Dangote Skills Acquisition Centre provide young people with opportunities to acquire marketable skills that can enable them to become entrepreneurs, skilled artisans or productive employees.

He stressed the need for greater emphasis on modern technical, digital and industrial training to meet the demands of an evolving economy and prepare youths for emerging opportunities.

Umar described Kano as the commercial and economic hub of Northern Nigeria, adding that the Foundation’s interventions have continued to impact various sectors and improve the lives of ordinary citizens.

He noted that beyond skills development, the Foundation has made significant contributions in healthcare, education, women empowerment, water supply and poverty alleviation programmes across the region.

“What is particularly commendable is that these interventions complement government efforts while directly addressing the needs of vulnerable communities,” he said.

The MAN chairman also disclosed that Dangote Industries Limited has consistently supported the association through annual sponsorship, a gesture he said reflects the company’s commitment to the growth of Nigeria’s manufacturing sector and stronger collaboration among local manufacturers, government institutions and major industrial investors.

Also commenting on the development, Managing Director of Radio Kano, Abubakar Adamu, described the takeover of the skills acquisition centre as one of the most strategic partnerships for Kano’s future development.

According to him, the state’s growing youth population requires innovative solutions beyond conventional public sector employment.

He said empowering young people with relevant and industry-driven skills would not only improve their employability but also create a new generation of entrepreneurs capable of driving economic growth and innovation.

Adamu emphasised that skills acquisition programmes aligned with labour market demands are critical to addressing unemployment and reducing poverty among young people.

Observers believe the latest initiative further reinforces the Aliko Dangote Foundation’s role as a key partner in Nigeria’s socio-economic development, particularly in efforts aimed at empowering youths, creating sustainable livelihoods and supporting inclusive growth.

With the Kano centre now under its management and another facility completed in Kogi State, the Foundation is expected to broaden access to vocational, technical and digital training, providing thousands of young Nigerians with the skills needed to compete in an increasingly technology-driven economy.
