The President of the International Press Institute (IPI), Nigeria Chapter, and Editor-in-Chief of Premium Times, Musikilu Mojeed, has been invited to speak at the 10th Piauí International Journalism Festival in São Paulo, Brazil.
Mojeed is among eight newsroom leaders from different countries selected to participate in the festival, where they will discuss the challenges of leading media organisations amid political, social and institutional pressures.
The invitation was extended by Daniel Bergamasco, Executive Editor of Piauí and curator of the festival, following research into the work of the Nigerian journalist.
The festival, scheduled to take place in São Paulo, has the theme “In the Eye of the Hurricane – Newsroom Captains Through the Storm.”
According to the organisers, the sessions will examine what it means to lead newsrooms during periods of intense political and social pressure, particularly when journalists and media organisations face difficult institutional and political environments.
Mojeed is scheduled to speak on Sunday, September 6, from 2pm to 3:15pm. He will be interviewed on stage by Angélica Santa Cruz of Piauí and Pedro Borges of Alma Preta, a Brazilian publication covering issues affecting Black communities.
The Nigerian journalist will share the platform with prominent newsroom leaders, including Alan Rusbridger, former Editor-in-Chief of The Guardian; Dean Baquet, former Executive Editor of The New York Times; Jeffrey Goldberg, Editor-in-Chief of The Atlantic; Carlos Dada, Founder and Director of El Faro of El Salvador; Olga Rudenko, Editor-in-Chief of The Kyiv Independent; Manisha Pande, Editorial Director of India’s Newslaundry; and Luz Mely Reyes, Director-General of Venezuela’s Efecto Cocuyo and columnist for El País.
The festival will also feature Brazilian journalists, academics and public intellectuals, including economist Persio Arida.
The event is particularly significant for Piauí magazine as it marks its 20th anniversary.
The organisers described Piauí as a non-profit long-form journalism magazine whose operations are primarily supported by an endowment fund. The festival is expected to bring together journalists and journalism students from across Brazil to exchange experiences on newsroom leadership and public-interest journalism.
The sessions will be conducted with simultaneous translation, while the interviews will be recorded and made available online after the festival.
