Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, has drawn a clear line for contractors handling government projects, warning that anything short of quality delivery will not be accepted as work begins on the N5.4 billion dualisation of the Mashi township road.
The governor delivered the message on Tuesday during the groundbreaking ceremony for the three-kilometre road project, a development expected to reshape commercial activities in one of the state's busiest trading centres.
Standing before residents and government officials gathered for the event, Radda made it clear that Mothercat Nigeria Limited, the firm awarded the contract, must meet every approved specification and deliver a project capable of serving the community for years to come.
The governor said his administration was investing heavily in infrastructure not for political optics but to unlock economic opportunities and improve everyday life for residents. He stressed that communities such as Mashi deserve durable projects that can withstand the pressures of growing commerce and population.
For years, Mashi has remained a major commercial destination, drawing traders, farmers, livestock dealers and transport operators from across Katsina State and neighbouring areas. The town's market has grown into a critical hub for the movement of agricultural produce and livestock, contributing significantly to economic activities within the region.
However, the increasing commercial traffic has also placed enormous pressure on existing road infrastructure, particularly along the strategic Katsina-Daura corridor. According to the governor, the road expansion project is designed to address those challenges while preparing the town for future growth.
Beyond easing traffic congestion, the project is expected to improve access to markets, reduce transportation costs, shorten travel time and create a more attractive environment for businesses and investors.
Radda said the benefits extend far beyond transportation, noting that improved infrastructure often serves as a catalyst for job creation, increased commercial activity and broader economic development.
"This project goes beyond asphalt and concrete. It is an investment in commerce, agriculture, employment and the overall wellbeing of our people," the governor stated.
Providing details of the project, Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Sani Magaji, said the state government had committed N5.4 billion to the construction of the dual carriageway.
He explained that the project would feature modern infrastructure components, including solar-powered street lighting, pedestrian walkways, reinforced drainage channels and other safety measures designed to meet engineering standards.
Magaji described the initiative as another demonstration of the Radda administration's drive to modernise critical infrastructure across Katsina State and improve connectivity between economic centres.
As construction begins, attention will now shift to the contractor's ability to meet both the quality expectations and completion timeline set by the government. For residents and traders who rely heavily on the Mashi corridor, the project represents not only a road upgrade but also a promise of easier movement, stronger business activities and improved economic prospects.
