GOVERNMENT HOUSE, KATSINA

PRESS RELEASE

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has said youth skills remain the foundation for economic growth, as he marked the 2026 World Youth Skills Day.

The Governor spoke on Wednesday in Katsina, noting that this year's theme, “Skills for a Shared Future"*, calls for the need to equip young people with technical, digital, green and social skills to thrive in a fast-changing world. He said when young people acquire relevant skills, they create jobs, establish businesses and lift families out of poverty.

The Governor also said KYCV had recorded significant progress in 2026 under his administration, with the state now positioned as one of Nigeria’s leading hubs for technical and vocational education and training.

According to him, 40 instructors at the village were trained and certified as Quality Assurance Assessors this year, while five former COSDEC centres were approved by the Federal Ministry of Education as recognised skills training centres under the National Skills Qualification Framework.

Governor Radda said KYCV also developed training manuals for 29 trades in line with National Skills Qualification Framework and National Occupational Standards, adding that the effort had drawn commendation from the National Board for Technical Education.

“The Executive Secretary of NBTE described the manuals as a model that other institutions can adopt. This means our graduates will be trained to the same standard as graduates anywhere in the country,” he said.

The Governor explained that the state had shifted to competency-based training to ensure young people learn by doing rather than relying only on classroom instruction.

“Too many graduates cannot do the jobs they were trained for. We are changing that in Katsina. Our young people train on real equipment, learn real skills and graduate ready to work,” Radda said.

He added that KYCV had established an Innovation Department where trainees are engaged in research, product development and digital fabrication. The state, he said, is also collaborating with Maglush Electric Vehicles to build capacity in electric vehicle technology.

On employment, the Governor said the focus was now on entrepreneurship and private sector partnerships to connect graduates with opportunities.

“Training is good, but young people need jobs. That is why we are pushing entrepreneurship and working with government agencies and private organisations to create pathways for our graduates,” he said.

Governor Radda said thousands of youths are currently undergoing training in dozens of trades across KYCV’s three main campuses and five skills training centres.

The Governor said Katsina would continue to prioritise skills development to produce globally competitive and self-reliant youths that will drive industrialisation and sustainable development in the state. He added that he joins the global community in the celebration of World Youth Skills Day 2026 and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a skilled workforce for a shared future.
