China’s pet care industry is undergoing a technological revolution, with artificial intelligence-powered devices rapidly reshaping how millions of owners monitor, feed and interact with their pets.

The growing popularity of smart pet products is being driven by rising pet ownership and increasing demand for convenient, data-driven care solutions. According to the Belt and Road News Network (BRNN), technological innovation is transforming pet care into a more sophisticated and connected experience.

Industry figures show that by 2025, the number of cats and dogs in urban China had surpassed 126 million, while the country’s pet consumer market was valued at roughly $46 billion, highlighting the sector’s remarkable growth.

At a major pet products exhibition held in Shanghai earlier this year, manufacturers showcased a wide range of intelligent pet-care technologies, including smart cameras, automated feeders, water dispensers and AI-powered companion robots.

Among the visitors was Wang, a cat owner who relies on a facial-recognition feeder to manage the diets of her pets. After registering each animal, the device creates individual profiles, allowing it to identify and feed them accordingly.

“Even when I add large chunks of freeze-dried food, the device performs perfectly,” Wang said. “When I’m away on business, I can use an app to check when and how much each cat has eaten, and I can also monitor the remaining food level in the feeder.”

Smart wearable devices are also becoming increasingly advanced. Modern pet collars can track activity levels, sleep patterns and heart rates in real time, sending instant alerts to owners if unusual health indicators are detected.

Companies are now going beyond individual devices to create integrated pet-care ecosystems. One such system combines a smart water bowl capable of analysing drinking habits, a feeding bowl that flags unusual eating behaviour, and a facial-recognition litter box that monitors waste patterns. All the information is collected on a central platform, providing owners with comprehensive insights into their pets’ health.

Innovation in the sector has even led to the development of a smartphone designed specifically for pets. The device focuses on communication, safety and health monitoring, enabling owners to interact with their animals remotely, issue training commands and track their location using GPS technology.

Equipped with a camera that captures a pet’s perspective, the gadget offers owners a unique way to stay connected with their animals while away from home.

As AI technology continues to evolve, China’s smart pet care industry is moving beyond basic automation and health monitoring toward a future where technology enables deeper interaction and understanding between pets and their owners.
